I paid for the scope and it arrived on my doorstep in three days. I also bought a set of 2” colour filters, a 9mm plossl and laser collimator. Nothing has dropped off, broken off, loosened off, corroded, worn out, or snapped. Small movements of the scope keep the object in the EP, or if you can get the object to the edge of the EP you can watch it move slowly across the entire diameter in the field of view without vibration. The Lightbridge needs to be located on a reasonably level platform or it will move about on its azimuth bearing through gravity - the roller bearings are that good. I take this scope outside whenever I can. I received the telescope in 2 boxes. My Meade deluxe lightbridge 12” came with a 2inch Crayford type focuser, a 2inch Meade QX wide angle 26mm Eyepiece (EP) which is 5 element, fully multi-coated and with a 70degree apparent field of view. I have found that lugging the scope around by the truss tubes can pull the upper OTA and mirror cell out of alignment - so I now lift the OTA by the bearing wheels. The scope actually came in two packages: one containing the mount - in this case a chipboard rocker box (white plastic coated) with an accessory tray on the side, the other containing the Optical Tube Assembly (OTA). Is this scope perfect? You can get over it and it’s okay, but it’s strange nonetheless that the most expensive and highly researched and invested component in the scope is mounted on three such poor springs, sleeves and knobs. However, the Meade Lightbridge continues to perform and show off the wonders of the night sky to me and my family and generally I’m really very happy with its performance. The fellow on the end of the phone was knowledgeable and gave some helpful advice. With a focal ratio of F/5 you will be looking at EPs at the middle to upper end of the quality market, or you might be disappointed with your purchase. You’ll never forget the image of Saturn. The Pleiades is just beautiful and jumps right out at you in the 26mm EP. You’ll then be looking for a counterbalance weight for the mirror cell and that will play heavily on the altitude bearings. Planetary (9mmEP): Have seen surface detail on Mars, ice caps, dark patches etc. Views along the terminator are brim full of detail and very rewarding. No, but it’s pretty good just as it is. Their website had plenty of information and the scope was a very reasonable price. This decision was based primarily upon the large aperture this scope provides and the fact that I personally find using slow motion controls on equatorial mounts very difficult and actually rather awkward - and I personally wasn’t looking for a GOTO mount this time. Another advantage of this Dobsonian is that it requires very little set up time. It will never fit into a backpack, but does break down into four easily manageable sections: Rocker box, Upper OTA, Mirror Cell and Truss Tubes - plus any accessories and EPs. I bought this scope after several weeks of research into the many different types of scope and mount and decided that this one was for me. If you have an unused corner of the house, you will find the scope will probably fit it without getting in the way very much. Please re-enable javascript to access full functionality. The rocker box is really only chipboard and although of course it has never seen any rain, it has been subjected to plenty of dew and it’s still fine, as are the mirrors and all adjustment screws and knobs. The 26mm QX EP is fine and it works for me. You will use all these and more, and if you buy super, or ultra wide angle EPs you’ll be rewarded with the view. Our rating . I know when I unpacked the scope that I thought the plastic red dot finder bracket would be the weak link in the chain, but it’s the the collimation knobs on the primary mirror that give me the most trouble. I have had the scope a little over a year now and I reckon I’ve only missed a handful of dark, clear skies and the scope is not worse for wear from lugging it around. I have found that although the battery case requires 8xAA batteries, the fan hardly drains the batteries so they last for quite a while. You will however be looking to buy a couple more EPs and a 9mm is a good start, or if you’ve got good seeing a 7.5mm is a safe bet. The completed OTA then lifts into the rocker box and is held secure within the altitude bearings under its own weight. Mit einem Meade LightBridge Dobson erwerben Sie eine qualitativ hochwertige Meade Optik, Premium-Komponenten und ein hohes Maß an Transportabilität - und das zum Preis … A cooling fan is built into the mirror cell and you get a rather flimsy looking 8xAA battery case and unpluggable lead. … You can tighten down or loosen the azimuth bearing by adjusting the one knob in the centre of the rocker box base. You lift the OTA by the large bearing wheels and it is pretty heavy; if I wasn’t as strong as I am, I might have trouble moving the OTA in one section. Well, I’'d opt for better altitude bearings (other than the standard felt lined ones), or stronger primary mirror collimation screws. Really. Check great and honest reviews! This 12" Meade Lightbridge does this rather nicely. Robust isn’t the word - it’s very tough. Several functions may not work. The built-in fan assists in this somewhat and is adequate for this purpose. Lunar: Perfectly sharp image, extremely bright of course. Plenty of detail here. There is little need for the altitude brake when using the scope in its standard form without heavy accessories to unbalance it. If you don’t loosen the mirror locking screws after bringing the scope back inside the house, you may find it will go out of alignment. There are smaller ones in the range which are less heavy. You have a choice between an 8”, 10” or 12”, and you can get the deluxe or regular flavor. I have had little previous experience with telescopes or mounts except an old equatorial mounted refractor a few years ago. You get the whole moon in the 26mm EP. Just about the best you will get. A moon filter is also a good option - anything like this to take down some of the brightness is welcome. If kept inside in the warm, the scope will need cooling down when taken outside. One thing that Meade still needs to work on is designing a mirror cover that actually stays on the mirror during shipping. However, an UHC filter will help you see nebulosity in the Pleiades as well as a little more in the M42 Orion Nebula amongst others. The standard scope is completely manual and moves freely and silently thanks to the azimuth roller bearings and felt-lined altitude bearings. I love the fact that the OTA is a Newtonian design and so you look through the EP to the side, at the top of the OTA. Beau Brummell So you know, I am a complete and utter novice. The LightBridge is made by GSO for Meade and currently comes in three different sizes and two different flavors. Fortunately, my experience of Rother Valley Optics was a very positive one. Both the EP and the extension tube will accept a standard thread 2inch filter. This is really only aesthetic, but sometimes it can make a grinding noise. To move the scope the short distance to the garden, it is easy to part the OTA from the rocker box, move the rocker box to the observing platform and then carry the OTA outside and place it back inside the rocker box. You might need to collimate it every time you use it (I do). You currently have javascript disabled. Saturn has a lovely sandy beach colour with this scope. Other than these points it’s a great scope. 10 inch Meade LightBridge. The OTA was also very simple to construct: the truss tubes clamped securely into the mountings on the mirror cell with simple locating lugs and bolts with hand knobs, and the upper OTA fitted onto the truss tubes with some slight tension in the tubes - a very stiff and secure structure.
